BIRCHALL: 'I'VE GOT MORE GOALS IN ME'
Posted on: Fri 08 Aug 2008
barnetfc.com spoke to Adam Birchall as the start of the new season approaches fast.
Adam Birchall is ready to build on his form from last season and is looking to get amongst the goals as the Bees look for promotion.
He told www.barnetfc.com 'It was frustrating in the end that we couldn't keep the great run going, we got to 5th place at one stage. We had a young side and I think our lack of experience got to us in the end'.
The striker added, 'We're still a young side, but we've got that experience behind us now and we'll use that to push on'
The Maidstone - born front man notched fifteen goals in 2007/2008 and was the club's top scorer. Even so, he feels that there is more to come from him and the whole team.
'I've definitely got more goals in me' said Birchall, 'I got fifteen last year and I can definitely get more. I'm never thinking about missing when I get the chances'.
A couple of goals in pre-season have started the ball rolling for Adam, including an emphatically taken goal against Watford, 'I enjoyed the Watford game a lot, we'd really progressed well in the week previous after Leeds beat us' he said, 'Leeds beat us comprehensively really, but with steady improvement we hit some form against Watford.
'It's all about building up gradually during pre-season and hitting form at the right time. Leeds were superb and kept the ball from us really well so we can learn things from that as well.
'Everyone knows what we can achieve here'.
It would seem that Adam shares the excitement and hope held by supporters that Barnet can really make an impact this season. 'Hopefully we can really fulfil our potential this season and we can hope for big things'.
On a personal note, 'Birchy' will be adding the goal of the season accolade to his targets for the season. He faced stern opposition last season with goals from Jason Puncheon flying in left, right and centre, though the fantastic equaliser at Swindon in the FA Cup was a special moment for fans and players alike. 'Seeing that one go in and how much it meant to the fans was a brilliant moment. I don't get many like that, I'm an in-the-box type player, but it was absolutely fantastic running towards the fans to celebrate it '.
As one of the 640 fans who had made the trip West that day, I can vouch for that one. The scenes in the away end when his shot flew past Swindon keeper Peter Brezovan were nothing short of sheer madness, and were part of a superb run to the fourth round.
And the 23-year-old is looking for more success in the Cup competitions as well, having played a big part in the Bees reaching the fourth round for the first and second time in their history. 'As a player you just want to win everything you play in, even if it a long shot.' he said, 'When you go out onto the pitch your aim is to win the game, no matter who you're playing against and what competition it's in.'
The Bees meet Brighton in the Carling Cup next Tuesday , having met them in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at the Withdean last season, 'Brighton proved they were a decent side last year, but we gave them a real run for their money. As I say, you want to win everything you play in, so we'll be out to get a win and get through to the next round'
Known as a "Barnet Goal Machine" by the fans, Birchall is keen to repay the support he has received in this, his third season at the club, 'It's a cliché but it really is true about support being valuable to the players. If we're all together in unison, from the supporters right across to the backroom staff it can only have a positive effect. The last thing you need to hear when you're out there is people getting on your back. You don't hear that at Barnet, so it's a win-win situation really.'
It is clear that Adam Birchall and the rest of the team are focused and ready for the new season. There is an optimistic buzz around the club at the moment and we'll all be there on Saturday at 3 pm to kick off another new season, one that will hopefully end in glory.
