Match Report: Histon 0-4 Barnet
Barnet brushed aside Blue Square Premier new-boys Histon on a beautiful summer's day in Cambridgeshire.
The two sides started pretty evenly without either keeper being severely tested. The Bees would open the scoring on thirteen miutes however, when a throw-in fell to the feet of Neal Bishop who swept a left foot shot into the roof of the net.
The goal gave Barnet the impetus they needed to increase the tempo as they took the game to Histon.
Michael Leary and Adam Birchall both went close, but Anthony Thomas really should have scored just after the half hour mark. Rob Beckwith's goal kick was not dealt with by former Bees man Patrick Ada, Birchall squared to Thomas and his shot was well saved by Mark Osbourn.
Histon were being kept at arms length and were still unable to test Beckwith. Most of their threats came from the set-pieces of Gareth Gwillam, most of which were met by the solid defensive pairing of Burton and Yakubu.
And on 37 minutes, Adam Birchall doubled the lead with his first goal of the Pre-Season campaign. Neal Bishop was unfortunate in hitting the post from the edge of the box and Birchall was first onto the ball to slide into the corner.
Histon nearly pulled themselves a goal back straight after the restart with a neat move, but the volley from Neil Kennedy found it's way high into the trees over the small terrace behind the goal.
Jason Puncheon was to add a third after the hour, with an excellent solo goal. The midfielder managed to weave himself into space on the edge of the box and fired into the far corner of the net.
It was four after 73 minutes, with local boy Danny Hart getting himself on the scoresheet, his well placed left foot shot squeezing inside the near post.
With the Bees in complete control, Hart almost added a second late on but his low shot from the edge of the box cannoned back off the post.
Next up will be a tougher test in League Two necomers Morecambe at Christie Park. Let's hope for some similar weather for the Bees fans making the long weekend trip. Reckless brings you all you need to know in his Reckless Guide To Morecambe. Alternatively, if you're not travelling up the M6, you can catch all the action live on Barnet World with Barry Swain.
