Match Report: St. Albans City 0-4 Barnet
Jason Puncheon netted three penalties as Barnet strolled to a comfortable 4-0 win over St. Albans City at Clarence Park on Tuesday.
In truth it could have been more for The Bees as they dominated the Conference South side from start to finish, however they were met with an inspired performance by Saints keeper Nick Eyre.
The first real opening came after 10 minutes when some very neat play by Jason Puncheon and Adam Birchall saw them break into the area. Puncheon's square cross was fired towards goal from close range but was well stopped by Eyre.
Birchall was denied again on 17 minutes when through one-on-one, his low shot blocked with the keepers' legs.
Trialist Ben Wright again looked impressive and linked up well with Birchall. The latter did well on the right hand side and crossed for Wright, but his low header was again well saved.
Michael Leary had to go off after suffering a facial injury after an aerial challenge, barnetfc.com are still waiting for results of his scan.
St. Albans were being restricted to long balls forward, which were being comfortably mopped up by defensive pairing Ismail Yakubu and Sagi Burton, who were solid throughout the evening.
Ben Wright went close again before Jason Puncheon finally broke the deadlock from the penalty spot after City were penalised for handball. Puncheon stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to give the Bees a deserved lead going into the break.
In the second half, Barnet were even more dominant.
On 51 minutes, Jason Puncheon tricked his way into space and fired a low right foot shot back off the woodwork.
Moments later, Ashley Carew was set free on the left but he fired his shot straight at the keeper.
Things boiled over momentarily after Max Porter was scythed down from behind. Players from both sides got involved and the offender, Jon Mackie, was substitued.
On 76 minutes, Anthony Thomas would make it 2-0. Thomas picked up the ball on the right hand side and weaved his way past Michael Harvey. With suspicions of a foul being waved away by the officials, Thomas was given time to beat another defender, round the keeper and coolly slot home for a very neat second goal.
Jason Puncheon won himself a penalty on 83 minutes after being tripped on the edge of the box having been surrounded by white shirts. He went the same way as before to make it 3-0.
And there was still time for a third penalty for Barnet after another handball. Keeper Nick Eyre, who had been keeping the crowd entertained throughout the night, picked the ball up and sprinted towards Puncheon to give him the chance of a hat-trick. Puncheon obliged, sending the ball straight down the middle for a fourth Barnet goal.
In all, a comfortable win for Barnet and it may have been more if not for the performance of Eyre in the City goal. The final pre-season friendly is against Conference new boys Histon at the Glassworld Stadium on Saturday.
